Threading Question

I have read that the lathes can do threading using CNC software when it has feedback of the spindle speed. I have seen a couple videos of this in action with a lathe cutting both the outside and the inside threads. I was wondering if using this type of setup a 7x10 mini-lathe would be able to cut internal ACME threads to use to make Delrin ACME nuts.

Threading

Are you able to run any other kind of thread? If your lathe can do single point threading you should be able to do ACME. Just requires a different tool. Might even be a tap that you can use and do a tapping cycle but I am unfamiliar with ACME taps.

Thanks for the response James,

I know that the lathe does some threading. I am just not sure whether or not ACME is one of them or not.

There is an ACME tap that costs about $52.95. That is one of the reasons I was wondering if it could just be done with a CNC converted lathe. That is my planned project over the next couple of weeks and I am also working on building a router table. I would like to be able to make my own delrin nut, but if the tap costs $53 I am probably just as well off buying one that is already made. But if I can tap one with my lathe after it has been converted I should be able to start looking for some delrin scraps.

Threading code

I would use a standard g76 code for it. The machine doesn't differentiate between different types of threads unless you get a custom made macro for it.. which is generally unnecessary. The only major difference between most threads is the cutting tool used.

Thanks James.

Just in case anyone is interested in seeing what I was talking about, this is the link to the video.

if the lathe can do threading then it can do acme the only thing with acme thread is that it will put more strain on the lathe then standard thread, so the only thing you need is a acme thread tool to do it and to select the good tpi on the lathe
