HF 8x14 vs HF 9x20

i'm looking at these two machines. i had a 9x20 a while ago and sold it. is the 8x14 physically shorter than a 9x20? i don't have the space for a larger lathe right now and don't want a 7x10. on the 8x14 does the lack of quick change gears bug you? i liked being able to turn material off at various feedrates and was wondering if this bothered anyone? ultimately i would like the quick change gears but won't be threading a whole lot with it. ultimately size is a bigger concern at this point in time.

How big is big? The 7x lathes can be picked up and moved by one person, the 8x and 9x are 2-man jobs at the least. Both are considerably larger in all dimensions than the 7x.

ultimately i'm ok with the weight of the 9x20 or the 8x14 but i'm more interested in how long it as i don't have alot of room to put it.

if you want i can measure end to end my 8x12. one positive thing about the 8x12 is its only $360 + tax at harbor freight right now with sale and 20 percent cupouns

just check its just under 36" long. Keep in mind you will need room to open the door thing on the left to swap belts/gears et cetera and room on the right to slide on and off the tailstock

i'm going to measure my 9x20 and see, ulimately i thought with the shorter cutting distance of the 8x12 i figured the machine would be shorter.

I'm completely new to lathe use.

Is the 8x12 a significant upgrade over the 7x10 or 7x12?
For that matter, is the 7x12 worth it over the 7x10?

Trying to figure out what I want to learn on, without crippling myself feature wise. I don't think the actual capacity is going to be an issue.

I did notice the 8x12 seems to be about 3x heavier (and therefore I'd guess more ridgid) and also does metric threads. Really $360 plus tax? Shows $599. I have a 20% coupon in email.

Jon,
Harbor Freight was having an in-store sale where the price was reduced to $450. Add the 20% off to that, and it works out to $360. I ordered mine last week for $380 out the door.

Teybar,
You said it's about 36" long....how DEEP is it? I'm going to start building a bench for mine and am just trying to figure out rough dimensions.

Thanks!
