    HF 9x20 Lathe Purchase Warranty?

Howdy, I just ordered my Harbor Freight 9x20 Lathe in person at the store and I'll pick it up next Monday. I am going to convert it to CNC. They offer a 1 year extended warrany for $80 and a 2 year exteneded warranty for $130. It's a replacement warranty. So if anything goes wrong just bring it in and they will give you a new one. I told the manager who's been there a long time I'll be making some modifications to the machine and he said it won't matter they'll still exchange it if it breaks.

Do you think it's worth it? I have 30 days to buy the extended warranty.

I usually don't get the extended warranties myself. I usually check stuff out pretty well during the first 30 days or so, and if there is anything wrong with something that isn't easily fixed I get it taken care of then.

After that, I figure there isn't much that can go wrong that I can't fix for the $80-130 the warranty costs. I can even replace the motor if it goes out and still be ahead.

Just food for thought... the machines are pretty modular so unless the bed just up and decides to crack on it's own I think you could fix just about anything for less than the warranty.

Plus, if you've modified it... you only have to re-mod whatever is broken and not the whole machine.

I have an 8x12, though... I'm not sure that it's the same with the 9x20.

Thanks. I usually go for extended warranties if they are reasonable. $130 is a bit much as the whole machine with tax was $608. I assumed the same thing. As much as some HF stuff is junk, most with a little clean up work well. I have one of their metal chop saws and bought the extended warranty because I was sure it was going to break and it never did. It's definately time to change the brushes though.
