HF 8x12(...14) 4 Jaw Suggestion

I just ordered an HF 8x12 (which is more or less the 8x14 from lathemaster as far as I can tell), and I was wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for an independent 4-jaw for this thing?

I know I'll most likely have to make an adapter plate to mount the chuck, so does anyone have a drawing or some measurements that I could use to start working on one now?

Thanks!

I called up the HF parts department to order mine.

It's on backorder, so I don't actually have it in hand yet. (So order early... you won't actually get anything for 6-8 weeks or maybe more?)

There's several accessories that HF has, below is the list. I just went ahead and ordered it all.. was around $120.

5" 4-Jaw Chuck* $58.50
Faceplate* $12.42
Follow Rest* $16.57
Steady Rest* $17.63
Splash Guard $17.37

I'd assume that because it's designed for the lathe there is no need for a backplate.

I ordered a couple parts for this lathe from HF back in the first of January. Still nothing! They say it is still back ordered.

I would just order the 5" 4 Jaw from LMS along with the adpater plate. You can save some money by getting the 5" 4 jaw off e-bay. I did and I think I paid $50 shipped.

I have my 5" 4 jaw from Lathemasters on my 8x12. Cost was very reasonable No adapter needed!
I tried to order the extra goodies from Harbor freight last week and the sales rep said " Very sorry but we no longer offer them" So if someone can confirm other wise please let me know, maybe with part numbers and I will go try again.

If you call CS they will tell you the parts are discontinued. You need to call and ask for the parts department. I am still waiting on parts I ordered in January and a replacement switch from February!

I'm starting to wonder if I should even bother with HF, I'm told that the lathe is still on backorder and that they'll be at the warehouse by May 15th, but I'm thinking I should start looking for alternatives, I don't want to be waiting until mid-july to get my lathe...

I think parts back orders are much slower than regular back orders. I got my X3 that way = two or three weeks.

http://www.lathemaster.com/LATHEMASTER8x14Lathe.htm you could get the same machine here but for the price, Im glad mines red and 450 cheaper not including the money I saved with free freight! I bought the gear reducer and the 4 jaw from him though - he doesnt mind...

I'm considering the 10x22 from Grizzly. My local HF wouldn't order it for me until it was off of backorder, so I tried putting in an online order, but its been almost 6 weeks since I put the order in and its still on backorder... Because of the free shipping etc the 10x22 is only a couple hundred more then the 8x14 but is a substantially better machine.

Well, I just put in my order for the Grizzly 10x22 after canceling with HF. I have to admit that Grizzly's customer support is miles above HF's. That said, Grizzly is also on backorder until May 25th, but I think I trust Grizzly more, and I know that I can at least get a hold of their customer support...

I bought a ton of stuff from Grizzly and was very happy until I needed a replacement gear for the power feed on my lathe. It's been on backorder for TWO MONTHS and is really starting to tick me off having to manually feed the lathe!

Little machine shop. com has a four jaw chuck as well as the other parts your looking for in stock. I also see a ton of them on E-Bay every day and sell pretty cheap. I just bought a 3" four and three jaw chuck for $65.00 shipped from a seller on E-Bay to use on my rotary table.

Here is my 9X20 and some of the tooling. I find it easier and faster to swap out the tail stock chuck for another one rather than re chucking a bit when making the same part over and over again.
