Quick release tail stock on 8x12 lathe

I modified my tail stock for quick release, being tired of cranking that big bolt all the time. Here it is completed.

I had to drill a 1/2" hole in the tail stock.

I made a new bolt from 3/8" treaded rod. I welded a nut to the end and drilled it out to 3/8". I made a new nut for the bottom too.

I took a chunk of 1/2" steel round stock, turned it in my 4 jaw and make a 3/8" "cam". I then put it back in my 3 jaw and turned the end down to 1/4". I drilled and tapped the end for 4/40 for a retaining screw. In the picture there is a spacer and a 1.5" round peice that the handle screws into.

I made an aluminum block with a 1/4" hole to support the unsupported end. A bolt keeps it all together. When I get my milling machine, I will mill a flat spot on the tail stock casting so the block will sit flat and look more profesional.

The drilled out nut on the bolt sits on the cam. Moving the handle about 45 degrees changes things from loose to tight. Works great.

I sure wish my tailstock on my 7x12 was that wide so it wouldnt tip when I try to slide it.
I was trying to sceme up an idea to make it wider

That definately looks very nice. one thing I have wanted to put on mine is a crank on the end of the leadscrew *hint* *hint*
