    Which small lathe in UK?

    Dear All,

I think I might be buying a small lathe in the not too distant future. Much as I would love to buy a second-hand British lathe, eg Myford ML7, I just do not have the knowledge to assess the condition of a second-hand machine.

Can anybody let me know what they think of the Axminster BV20M2?

    Many thanks

    Best wishes

    Martin

Why not go to Myford Ltd at www.Myford.com click on the Pre owned for a look a used. Myford remanufacturers and warrants these lathes for one year.I was interested but the 4660 Pounds seemed a bit steep for a 7 inch even if it did have a quick change gear box. Not many Myfords show up here in the States and I think it must be the pricing unless, of course most of that price is TAX. UGH!!

    Dear kgphilli,

Thank-you for your suggestion. I didn't know that Myford themselves sold re-conditioned machines.

There are quite a lot of Myfords available on e-bay in the UK, but, as I said, I really wouldn't know how to judge one's condition. I suspect that buying from Myford will be expensive compared to the Axminster alternative, but I'll look into it.

    Thanks.

    Best wishes

Looks like a lot of lathe at 140 kgs for GBP 400 and a geared head as well, but at that price its likely you will have to do "some" work on it to get it running right. You really need to see it, or talk to somebody that has one. Try getting some owner references from Axminster. Even some better photographs would help. Doesn't look Chinese, possibly it's of Indian origin.

    Regards
    Phil

    Dear philbur,

Thank-you for taking the trouble to reply.

I'm always attracted to a lot of weight, and 140kg suggests a bit less flex all round compared to lathes with less mass.

Yes, I entirely appreciate that I may have to do a lot of "tweaking".

Unfortunately, I just cannot find any owners at present to give me their opinions.

Meanwhile, thank-you for your kind help.

    With Best Wishes

    Hi Martin

I am in the UK, I have a Sieg C3 Lathe (7x14) from www.arceurotrade.co.uk, they are also on offer at the moment.

Im very impressed with it, they do offer to set it up for you before shipping for a fee, but I just had it delivered as is and it really was quite good, a little backlash but I soon got that sorted out, being a chinese machine it is to be almost expected.

Ive now got a fair bit of tooling, tailtock chuck, bigger 4 jaw chuck etc.

Something to consider anyway, I think the closest axminster do is the C2, which is a bit smaller, but i wanted to pay the little extra to get a few more features.

If you have any questions for someone who already owns one, just let me know, or you can find me on msn messenger (djh82uk@hotmail.com), I don't claim to be an expert, but I have learnt a lot these last few months.

I must admit, I do like the look of those AMA180v's, I was going to get it, but no-one had any for a few months, so I went with the C3 with DRO's and variable spindle speed + rpm display, plus there lots of info on mods etc for them and plans for cnc'ing them

    Dear John and DJH,

Many thanks for your advice. I very much appreciate it.

I'm still scratching my head on this, but I think I'm getting closer.

Martin you've been looking for a year or more. I think it's time to do it.

    Just a gentle push.
