| Hi all, I am just getting into CNC and just received my CNC Sherline lathe. However I am having a hard time getting going. I am using QCAD to draw the profile of a test piece then trying to use ACE Converter to convert the DXF to G-code which I intend to test using MicroTech CNC simulator before running it on EMC. However ACE convertor is just hanging when I load the file so I am not even seeing the g-code. Can anyone point me in the righ direction. Is there a better way to convert my DXF to G-code without spending a lot of money on software or writing the G-code manually? Also I have an embarrsingly simple question what axis should I be using for the lathe X & Z or Z & Y? I have attached my DXF from QCAD for info. Thanks in advance. David |

| David, My understanding (limited as it is) is that travel along the spindle centerline is always the Z-axis (lathe or mill). Then the cross-slide on the lathe is the X-axis. I had the same problem with DXFs generated by QCAD not generating gcode from ACE converter, if you find a solution please post. Alan Last edited by acondit; 06-26-2006 at 11:44 AM. | Thanks Alan. I will let you know if I find a solution, but I will probably change to using Vector CAD/CAM. David http://www.scalereplica.com |

| When I open that .dxf in AutoCAD, I lose my cursor and cannot perform any commands. I've been using AutoCAD for 10 years (every day) and have never seen that happen. Something very strange with that .dxf. Also, AutoCAD says it's a version 2000 .dxf If you can, try saving as a version 12 (or older) and see if that helps.

| Tried it again and it worked. Wierd. Anyway, you can download the free A9 converter from www.A9tech.com which should convert the .dxf to a useable form.

| Thanks Gerry that worked. Okay so now some follow up questions. I think I drew the profile 180 degrees wrong around the Z axis as the x axis values come out wrong in g-code (- when they should be +) so I need to fix that plus a couple of other small mistakes. However what I have drawn is the profile of the finished turned part, but obiviously what I need is the tool paths. What is the simplest way of generating the tool paths for my Sherline? Thanks again David |
