Keep It Or Upgrade?...Older Sherline CNC Lathes

I have several older Sherline CNC lathes that I am
considering either upgrading or selling and then buying a new Sherline
machine.

How would you decide whether to keep and upgrade OR selling the machine
to buy a new one? What differences are important and which are just
nice to have?

I would think with the number of older Sherline machines out there this would be an interest to number of people.

My concern is whether it was more economical to sell the old machines
and get the newer ones.

I note that since Sherline got into the CNC market, one can see
that they are tweaking their machines to make them more CNC capable.
Some of these tweaks cannot be done to the older machines. Whether
these mods are critical is another reason whether to keep or sell the
older machines.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks but I monitor both on a regular basis.

Do you have a Sherline CNC mill or lathe? If so, please offer your insight into the details concerning this subject.

I am still waiting for someone who has done a cost analysis or has done a comparison of the old versus new Sherline machines to speak up.

As I said before with the tweaks that Sherline has been doing to their machines of late, I suspect it is better to sell an older machine and buy the new CNC version.

So has anyone gone down this road before?

Why would you have several and whay would you still consider Sherline if they can't do what you need done?

Doesn't make any difference to me. A Lathes suitability is totally dependent on what you are doing with it at the time and its condition.

How would you expect anybody to answer that question when they do not have any idea at all what you expect to do with them?

My advice would be to figure out what you intend to do with them and then go from there. If the lathes don't currently cut the mustard then buy something new that does. To be bluntly frank I don't really know why anybody would want a CNC lathes as small as a Sherline. A Mill I could understand but capability wise you invest a lot of money in the Sherline to add the CNC capability. The same CNC capability could be added to a larger lathe that could better take advantage of the automation.

That is me of course but CNC just has so much more to offer on even a slightly larger lathe that I can't seem to justify it on a Sherline LATHE. Maybe we will get a torrent of response that differ as a result of that statement but I believe it to be true. It would be a different story with respect to Sherlines Mill or any other Mini/Micro Mill.
