I had this same dilema recently. As a matter of fact I just got mine last Friday.
In the end I chose the 7x12 from Cummins Industrial. Here is why:
1) I knew all the 7x12 accesories work on the 7x12. They may not on the 8x12.
2) There is some good info on the 8x12. There is more on the 7X12.
3) Speed knob on the 7x12. Change belts on the 8x12. (Minor I know).
4) Weight... The 8x12 weighs more, which is good, but I will just be cutting aluminum and rarely steel. I didn't need the extra weight (yet) and a lighter machine is easier to move around if need be.
5) HF dropped the ball. They couldn't get an order straight at the store after 3 visits and 3 calls. Ergo I was left with only Lathemaster... and it was a lot more to get an 8x12 through them vs the 7x12 through Cummins.
6) I had to make up my mind eventually...
#1,2 and 5 were the big reasons. Either way I think you will be happy. FWIW So far the Cummins looks like it will perform well. I am still cleaning it up and tuning it. I am also awaiting my LMS shipment for a QCTP and a 4 jaw chuck.
Oh I forgot to mention... be careful about the HF 7x10. The newer models that they are carrying supposedly no longer have an MT3 taper on the spindle. See the 7x10 board for details.
