How to remove handwheel from tailstock?

    Hi all,

    I have a clone 7x10 mini-lathe.

I bought a new tailstock casting and wanted to disassemble my old one so I could reuse the other parts. I can't seem to get the handwheel off - I took off the nut and the grub screw but the wheel won't come off.

    Any hints?

    Steve

Hi Steve. I had the same problem the first time I dismantled my tailstock. The problem was rust between the handle boss and the screw shaft. I managed by holding he tailstock by the handle and gently tapping the shaft with a brass drift (you need three hands to do this!) and it eventually came out. I cleaned up and oiled the two parts and I have not had a problem since.

    Thanks Mike,

With your hint I was finally able to get it off - I used a screwdriver and mallet to (gently) get in between the bracket holding the screw and the hand wheel.
