    Problem with compound power feed

I have recently bought an Axminster C2A mini lathe

I am having problems using the power feed that drives the compound slide towards the headstock. The problem is that when I engage the power feed, the tool shifts a little bit forward (in the direction that the cross slide goes), cutting off more material than I had hoped.

How can I adjust the lathe so that when I engage the power feed it does not shift the tool forward into my work?

    Thanks
    Jack

Have you checked the gibs and make sure they are snug and or tight? It sounds as though that could be the problem. Is it slack so that you can move it by hand and see the movement via an indicator? I really dont know what the issue is, but that is where I would start. Plus its free!

Looking at the lathe on the website, I would bet it is a gib adjustment. You say it only happens when feeding towards the chuck? Looking at the design, I would think if you have a front mounted tool post it is the cause. Does the tool tip move away from the part when the cuts are away from the chuck? Because you say you just bought it, did you go thru any double checks of the machines tightness and general assembly? I read about quite a few if not all machines need a little love during the initial set up and operation, like a break in period to some extent.

All sorted now, I tightened up the gibs, Also my quick change tool post was a little wobbly. I think that might have had something to do with it.

    Thanks for your help

Great to hear! Much better to work with a machine instead of on a machine, though I seem to do the first more often. LOL

If this is your first tool of this sort. Double check the tighteness of all fasteners on the machine on a regular basis as they will vibrate loose. They might never have even been tightened correctly in the first place. To get great results, set up is the key. Making sure ALL issues are minimized prior to beginning a cut or project. If you go thru everything now, you will be much happier with the results. You will see some on here who compound their ways before using.
