New controller PC / electronics enclosure

Here's my day's effort today: I used an old mid-tower ATX computer that already had the cover hacked from my desktop tinkering days of yesteryear.

It just squeaks in under the minimum system requirements for Mach, but it's a good running, stable PC.

Aside from the afore-mentioned case cover mod, I further modified the case by putting in some 3/8 aluminum angle to create a framework to support the G540 and power supply switch. I tapped off the computer power supply to run power to the power supply (seen in the bottom of the computer case).

Knudsen is kind enough to hook me up with a heatsink for the G540, so I will have to install that when I get it. Should be plenty of airflow through the case though.

Pretty cool. Everything in one box. Looks familiar, computergate box?

I haven't slept since Friday, I have a head full of beer, so if you'll excuse me, I'll go wash off the shiny 6's and 9's and get to sleep

(Yoos makes sure and makes yoos payments for yoos parts or wes sends Guidos out to helps yoos remembers yoos dues dates. Then if we gots no moneys we buys yoos some new shoes, some real heavy ones The if yoos still makes me angry we gunna take the dambid pea outa yoos whistle. That's last resort tho, just if yoos really makes us mad. Yoos don't wanna mess with LafMaf, cuz we badass.)

What took so long? My "friend" is NOT pleased.... don't make me put the WL "family" back together...

Lol, actually that was wicked fast turn-around! Will PM you with arrangements.

Thank you for the fast work. I would have had to use a sawzall and a file.

The box isn't a Computergate, but another popular cheap case from about 10 years ago. I saw the name on it when I had it apart, but don't remember what it was now.

    FAIL.

Well, the computer/CNC case has been disassembled. Seems as though the computer didn't want to play nice with the G540. I kept getting a BSOD, but not the typical Windows BSOD. This one said there was a "Hardware Malfunction" and to contact the administrator. And since I'm the admin, I made an executive decision to use another computer. That particular one was on the ragged-edge of being barely at the low-end of hardware requirements for Mach (actually, it was a bit below because Mach states a 1ghz machine, but this was an 800).

Anyway, the next computer in line is a pretty decent Compaq EVO, which is well above the minimal requirements. I can't mod the case to mount the CNC components because of it's small size, so I am back to square 1 for an electronics enclosure.

You could try the EMC2/Ubuntu Linux package, that's what I'm running on an old 950 Mhz machine with no problems...

I was thinking about trying some of the other programs, but really wanted to start off with Mach.
No, unfortunately no chance of dropping the Compaq board into the other case (especially since the old case & PC is in the bottom of the dumpster right now). Those Compaq and HP boards are SO proprietary it's not even funny (well, maybe a little)
Other than not being able to customize the Compaq Evo case, I really like it alot. It's set up for no-tools work. Everything slides/lifts or pivots out of the way for access, making it really a joy to work on. It's one I picked up off ebay awhile back for $50, then did a bunch of upgrades on.
It's running pretty good now, but I just have to make a custom electronics enclosure for the power supply and the G540

How big of box you need?

I used a "book-sized" computer case to house my electronics. I have a matching one that's for the computer. It's roughly 12x12x3" You'd probably need more height for the g540, but there are lots of different shapes/sizes/prices.

Actually the G540 isn't all that big. The biggest item is the power supply, and it's not very big (you can see it in the pic, in the bottom of the computer.

Hey Jon, I'm scheduled (again) to be out there Thursday next week. Hopefully it will stick this time, and I'll actually make it out there. I need a Dog-N-Suds fix BAD! My iguana and I used to eat at the one in WL all the time.
BTW: have you seen any place out there that sells their orange creme soda? We used to find it once in awhile at the Wally-World in WL.

Cool! No, I've never seen the D&S orange cream.

I've got a cisco router box you can have that might help you make a new enclosure. It's about as big as a small PC, but only 3" or so thick. Might be able to cut it down.
