I had the same problem when I bought my 8x12 from HF. There seems to be very limited information about tool shank size for the standard tool post. I too bought the "tool set" you mentioned that is backordered but you will find that those shanks are too small as well. I used some 3/8 square stock I found in my junk metal box to place under the tool shanks in the post and it did center them but they are still very flemsy and chatter. Some of the items in that set will be useful but the actual cutting tools are of little use on the 8x12, maybe they work in the 7x10 better? I did find this set at HF http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=39933 and have ordered a set but have yet to recieve them as they too are backordered. On my machine the center is 1/2 inch above the tool post floor and this set should be correct. I would also try to center the shanks under the hold down (clamping) bolts instead of letting them be jambed in the corner of the post. They don't have to contact the inside edge, just be snug under the bolts and not move. If you use something metal to shim up the tools you have, they will work but the machine was intended to use larger tools. I have already broken the holder for the parting tool on my lathe and still need to buy a decent replacement with a 1/2 tool shank. It would seem that the 8x12 is still a "mini" lathe, just not as "mini" as the tools they call "mini lathe tools".
