Y Axis Error
Milltronics RH-20 with Centurion 6 control.
When moving in the y axis (slowly) using hand wheel picking up an edge or indicating a face the machine makes a muffled howling noise. When it makes this noise for more than roughly 30 seconds (sometimes less) I get a y axis error and have to restart the machine. Anyone familiar with this noise? Y axis only. Also when doing an x-y arc it sometimes makes this noise and the surface finish is choppy. Thanks for any info.

Re: Y Axis Error
Your tach feedback armature needs to be cleaned. Power up and home the machine, estop, remove the y motor, remove the cap off the back of the motor, gently blow it out, pull the phenolic shield out of the way after unbolting the encoder bracket being sure to leave the encoder attached, now you will see a small armature and 4 small brushes, get a pencil with a good eraser, display the following error and make sure you have not moved the encoder to the point that it is more than a couple thou from where the machine thinks it should be, press reset, very slowly rotate the encoder shaft until the motor starts to spin, apply the eraser to the tach feedback armature, go in both directions by slowly rotating the encoder in the opposite direction, when it's polished out return the encoder to the point that the motor stops and estop the machine. Gently blow out the housing and replace the components in reverse order. Reinstall the motor. Try it out.
