I saw this twice yesterday and I’ve taken the machine off line until I find a solution. It’s an old (1995) Partner 1 enclosed bed mill with a C5 control. Both times the spindle turned on when the operator hit the Z button in HDW mode. Not good. ![]() Any suggestions on where to look (other than a new machine) would be appreciated.

Do you have a remote keyboard plugged in? If so, try it again with the keyboard unplugged. If you have a stuck ALT key, the F3 button in handwheel for the Z axis would give the same command as the CW button. This problem could also be caused by a bad Keypad Encoder Board. Here are the keyboard replacements for all the front panel buttons: To Replace Front Panel Buttons Alt + F1 Spindle Stop Alt + F2 E-Stop Alt + F3 Clockwise Alt + F4 Feed Hold Alt + F5 Counter-Clockwise Alt + F6 Cycle Start Alt + F7 Mist Alt + F8 Tool Reset Alt + F9 Flood Alt + F10 Reset (may have to press the Reset button at the same time) Feed Rate Over-ride Spindle Over-ride Alt + A 0% Alt + 1 0% Alt + S 10% Alt + 2 10% Alt + D 20% Alt + 3 20% Alt + F 30% Alt + 4 30% Alt + G 40% Alt + 5 40% Alt + H 50% Alt + 6 50% Alt + J 60% Alt + 7 60% Alt + K 70% Alt + 8 70% Alt + Z 80% Alt + Q 80% Alt + X 90% Alt + W 90% Alt + C 100% Alt + E 100% Alt + V 110% Alt + R 110% Alt + B 120% Alt + T 120% Alt + N 130% Alt + Y 130% Alt + M 140% Alt + U 140% Alt + < 150% Alt + I 150% (Sorry, I can't get the formatting on the over-ride chart to work correctly)

The Keypad Encoder Board is attached to the backside of the alpha-numeric keypad inside the front-panel. The connector for the external keyboard is on the Keypad Encoder Board. Some machines have a jumper cable from the side of the front-panel to that connector.

Here is a picture of the inside of my Centurion V control, the board in the left portion of the pictures is the keyboard encoder board, you can see the adapter and cable I used to bring the connection to the side of the cabinet. My machine works just fine until I plug this cable in, evidently once plugged in it acts as an antenna and starts acting all sorts of weird, spindle turns on and off, machine moves at will, keys on the existing keyboard don't work at all, or take twenty hits to actually register. I panicked when I first hooked it up thinking the computer had gone haywire.... but disconnecting the wire has solved the issue... the factory version must have special shielding or something.... I haven't needed to use it since, so haven't delved into solving the problem.
