    Selecting good lathe inserts

We are in the process of going through our lathe inserts and organizing them. I'm going through the Kennametal catalog to get an idea of the best type of inserts we can get for medium to finishing type inserts. Has anyone used the Wiper inserts from Kennametal? What was your experience with these Wiper inserts? I know there are a multitude of different inserts for different finishes and different speeds and feeds. We have an Okuma LNC8 lathe 7.5 HP spindle with a 3500 max RPM. What CNMP, DNMP, VNMP, cutoff inserts, threading inserts, etc. grades do you know will work well with steel, aluminum, stainless steel turning? I want to compare what you guys say to what Kennametal says. Thanks.

    Mike

I personally think when it comes to turning with 80, 55, 35, or 17.5 degree that seco is superior, although with any type of grooving or parting , kennametal is number one! I have the advantage of both brands at my disposal on a wide variety of materials , and I constantly pit one against the other, and I always end up with the same conclusion, give seco a chance! I know Mitsubishi is very good with wiper inserts too!

    A late reply but...

Actually, all of the Kennametal parting and grooving technology os more than 14 years old now. It was good then, but others (Iscar, Walter, Sandvik, to name a few) have blown by them in performance with newer geometries and grades. Mitsubishi is in a same boat, except they've have some problems with shipments due to the earthquake and tsunami disaster.
