    Custom Drill Bit?

Im in need of a custom counterbore/drill and was wondering if anyone on here could lend some insite. I basically need a 13/64 drill that steps up to a 17/32's so I can drill the counterbore all in one shot and save some time.

I know they sell "drill rod" but its just sold round.. Is it possible to buy rod that has the flutes twisted into it already that I can machine to what I want and harden it? It's only being used in aluminum. Other then having someone make me one which I'm assuming won't be cheap, what are my options?

    Thanks

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.

You could make a flat drill from solid HSS round tool bits, grinding the flat part to form a flat drill with the step in, then if'n you have access to a cutter grinder, grind the flats to the diams of the two steps you need.

Alternatively, just take a couple of regular 17/32" drills to someone who does cutter grinding and get them to grind down the end to 13/64" diam for the length you need to do the drilling op.

You may save time drilling in one op, but you do need the volume to justify the expense of a composite tool....they're also very expensive to resharpen.

It's probably simpler to have two drilling machines side by side and mount the part to be drilled in a jig if required and drill it in two ops using regular off the shelf tooling.
