    Coloring brass

    Hi,

I want to engrave a plaque for a friend and I want to darken the brass prior to engraving. This will let the lettering show up quite well against the dark background. I would like to do this using readily available materials that I can purchase inexpessively and mix up at home.

Can anyone out there give me some suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ernie

Head down to the local Wal-Mart and look in the Sporting Goods section for Birchwood Casey's Brass Black. It's sort of like a cold bluing solution for brass. It will eventually rub off, so after the engraving you'll need to shoot some clear lacquer or Brass Brite coating on top of it to preserve the bluing.
