    Surface finish on journals

This might be the wrong forum.

I am trying to develop a technique to produce a very fine finish on both the stator and rotor of a very close tolerance journal bearing. I believe that I can develop a process on the rotor using a tool post grinder and polishing compounds but I am not sure how to approach the bore finish in the stator.

Has anyone done this and can recommend a process?

take a look at roller burnishing tools. I've used cogsdill & elliot with much success. been awhile but if I remember correctly you bore (or ream) within a few "tenths" then run the burnisher. you can get .0002 size control and 2-8 microinch surface finish, besides a better bearing surface because of the work hardening.

For OD work look at the cogsdill diamond burnishers. Finish turn a bit oversize then burnish to an 8 finish and .0003 tolerance on size. Did this on crankshaft journals very reliably on a line with a 23 second takt time (that included turning and burnishing).
