| Dan, Why don't you download and "Try Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 - It's FREE! You will be trying a 30-day, fully functional trial edition of Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12, which includes: Corel DESIGNER® 12 for advanced technical illustration and layout Corel PHOTO-PAINT® 12 for fast, easy, and powerful digital imaging CorelTRACE™ 12 for bitmap to vector tracing Corel CAPTURE™ 12 for screen captures" As you can see, it includes CorelTRACE for bitmap to vector conversion. You can try it to see if it works for what you're trying to do. On another note you may want to download and try the NEW 4.0 version of Vectric VCarve PRO. They have done a fantastic job with the new package and it now includes the ability to import and trace bitmaps. It is one of the simpler raster to vector converters to use and, in my opinion, gives excellent results. Link to free trial version. One other note, Vectric's Tech Support and online user support and supported forum can't be beat. Import & Trace Image Files * Import images and sketches then automatically Trace / Vectorize boundaries for machining. * Work with Colour and Black & White images JPG, BMP, TIF, PNG, GIF * With options for colour reduction, threshold control, corner fitting and noise filtering to help produce the required vectors. * Engrave images in seconds * No need to use Inkscape or Corel Trace etc. * Trace vector boundaries around Cut3D projects. Tracing Image Files (4.1Mb video) Tracing Image Files (1Mb PDF) In reality all of the raster to vector conversion applications each have their own strengths and weaknesses. No one program works best for the wide range of raster images that everyone tries to convert to vector format. CorelTRACE, Vectric VCarve v4.0, and Inkscape (Free - works great for me but others don't like it) are three of the better ones, again, in my opinion. BTW, I was thinking of you the other day and was going to drop you a note to see how your machine was coming along. I hope your making progress and everything is going smoothly! You must be getting close to completion since you're asking about design software and image conversion. I hope this helps,

Thanks for the information. The problem I have with the free download is learning how to use it. I called and talked to Corel Company and was told if I wanted a book on how to use it, put my money up front and then I could get my money back if I did not like it. One other problem I have is I am on dial up and I time out trying to download some of these free trial offers. and being 72 and in a power chair, it is hard for me to make what little money I get each month cover the bills I now have. The soft ware program I went with to run my unit is Quickstep, for me it was one of the low-end price wise and the guy that wrote it spent a lot of time on the phone with me to get me going. I love it, I can down load a DFX file and run it without doing any thing to it.And as I wanted to build some all wood clocks, the plans are there for me. Again. thanks for your help, I am goimg to try to get one of the guys that lives in Greenville, about 100 miles East of me to come over and take some pictures and put them on the zone, he is a member of the zone and has really help me to get this unit up and going. For now. Dan |
