Start or buy Woodworking business Orange County CA

I would love to talk with someone in business to show me the ropes. I'm ready to start but would like to avoid as many rookie mistakes as possible.

Lots of stuff is made out of wood, its just the medium. It could be anything from a house, or a boat to a skateboard...

I've done all 3, but is there anything in particular that you want to make or have experience in making..?

I would start by checking with every Govt. agency I could think of to find out what they require of me in terms of regulations to comply to. SoCal is a tough business climate due to regulations, taxes, and Govt. interference, you will need a DBA, probably a business license too, a way to dispose of HazMat, possibly a zoning variance if home based, . . . . Then document EVERYTHING. You need to learn about 1099 forms which you will send out and receive to document where the money is going out and coming in from. Then there's insurance s . . . are you getting excited yet ? sock away 1/2 of every cent you earn for taxes, Fed 15% SS & Mediscare 16.25% state 10% . . . or just make stuff & sell it for cash .

Thank you for the reply and sorry I didn't see it sooner. I've been a hobbyist woodworker for twenty years. My research into what sort of business to open guided towards wood turning, (balusters, columns and table legs). Only 2 companies doing it. 1 in San Diego and 1 in LA. Since I've been laid off I've been learning cnc. I built a 4th axis machine to learn from and purchased Bobcad-Cam. Before I purchase a real machine and lay out money to rent a place I'm hoping to find someone experienced to talk with.
