I'd start calling, stopping by different shops, get a phone book and run through the shops and see who is hiring, the right place at the right time, I've worked with guys that started off sweeping floors then, got busy and then your on a machine.
Hi everyone.
I'm looking into training to become a machinist of some sort.
Not really sure what my options are, but all of the searches of schools in the austin area turn out to be dead ends.
If anyone could guide me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
I would also be interested in a mentor if someone is willing or even just being to watch someone "at work". This field is very interesting to me and I've worked as a machine technician; SMT machine operator/programmer; HVAC; and now am a out of work licensed electrician...
working as a maintenance man to make ends meet...
Thanks for your input and guidance.

Sarge,
I'm not a professional machinist just a hobby machinist.
Any other background on yourself to share?
There are/well were some companies that did medical implants...knee and other joints that have people with maching skills.
Have you done any CAD or 3d Modelling?
It seems that this part of the country has limited training for machinist, which is probably a good indication of the number of machinist related job opportunities.
Some of the machinist related opportunities are in the Rapid Prototyping field all of which require CAD experience, 3d Modeling, etc.
