Entry level worker looking for suggestions - Madison WI

    Hello,

I have been working in a custom architectural sheet metal shop for the past three and a half years, primarily on a PlasmaCAM 4x4 table. Prior to my employment there I worked in AutoCAD for seven years in communications technology and electrical engineering. All of my drafting experience has been 2D but I am very interested in learning 3D drafting.

I am moving to Madison WI in about two weeks and am interested in pursuing more CNC work. I enjoy the challenge and problem solving, and enjoy the fabrications process, and NOT sitting at a desk all day. Working with plastic or glass perhaps appeals to me most, but any material would be fine. Metal, wood, stone, etc.

Is a degree/certification necessary to get into the field?

Any software suggestions that I might be able to start teaching myself?

How is the economy affecting this field of work? Am I trying to get in at a bad time?

    Thank you,
    AZ

I am from Fond DU Lac WI myself. If you were looking in Milwaukee (city was built on its industrialization) instead of Madison id say you have a pretty good chance of getting in at one of the Fab/Machine shops. However in Madison the job market for machining jobs is alot more competitive. Our state in general hasn't had it as bad as others.

As far as certification look into Kennametals online course for a Certified Metalcutting Proffesional. It will run you about $700 dollars but well worth it to get your feet wet with concepts and cutting something. It is all done online and is a great course.I have taken it and loved it.The other course you could take is another online course provided from Sandvik which is also good to learn at least metalcutting. As far as software for CNCmachining goes I use Mastercam.I like it.The best thing to do is contact the local reseller in the area ans talk to them about getting a demo cd or attending the Mastercam University to learn the software. At least you would then have an understanding of programming.I hope this helps.Keep us informed.
