Smile CNC Wood Router mentor available in Houston, TX

I have a large CNC wood router in my garage that I assembled myself from www.3drouters.com that has 24" x 58" of travel and I use it for signmaking, cutting wood parts, etc. I live in Channelview (about 17 miles east of downtown) and would be willing to get together with some like-minded folks to share ideas with or possibly create a club.

If interested, email me back at tnorris@houston.rr.com.

    Hi all,

I'm also in the Spring area, just got machines moved in about a month ago. I'm contemplating new hardware/software for my Lagunmatic 310, currently a dead control board..Otherwise my lathe and surface grinder are ready for fun!

I have a platform CNC in my garage that I am about in whits ends trying to get running. Had 2 computers go out on me and when I finally had it running with the third I knocked it over and now it the CNC doesn't run again. I am just starting with CNCing so if someone wants to help show me the ropes I am more than willing to share the machine. Very interested in a club if one gets started.

    I'd be glad to help.
Operating software? (I am most familiar with Mach3)
    Computer operating system?

I'm in Santa Fe which is near Texas City.

    Thanks for the reply Bob,

I am running Mach3 on windows XP.

I am in Houston off 610 by 290.

The computer did run my machine. I got as far as configuring it and running some test gcode and then i decided to clean up a bit before I started my first cuts. The tower got tangled in the shop vac cord and fell over. Now the computer still runs fine but the CNC wont move. I assume I screwed up the printer port but have no way to confirm. The first couple computers I had died, I think due to age and it took me forever to find another that ran XP and had a printer port. I literally spent a weekend driving around to stores before I found this one. Any idea how to test a printer port?

I am completely new to this so sorry if this is a stupid question.

There are few options: You could google "parallel port tester" and download a program that tests the port, go to tigerdirect.com or the flea market in Pearland and find another computer, or get a LAN or USB smooth stepper from cnc4pc.com. I would suggest the smooth stepper as Windows® has a tendency to grab utilities and cause communications problems across the parallel port. I am in process of installing a LAN smooth stepper and C32 BOB in my machine as well as upgrading the motor power.

I have a full set of small stepper motors/drivers available cheap.

There is no such thing as a stupid question........except the one that isn't asked.

The smooth stepper looks perfect! the fact that I have to keep finding older computers to just have them die is frustration. This should be perfect. Thanks!
