    E/G mill design

Hello, I have posted a few times already about this in the E/G thread with some helpful replies, but was recommended to make my own.

Here are some pictures of the design I had come up with:

Have you a plan for how you are going to get rails on two sides of two separate monoliths parallel and aligned? Four vertical surfaces that need to be parallel and aligned, but can not be cheaply ground after the uprights are mounted to the base does not seem like a practical solution.

If you are planning to use the common E/G method of casting steel mounting rails into the E/G, and then having precision interface surfaces for the Linear bearings ground after it cures, you would seem to be making it very differcult for yourself.

Remember the engineering adage "anyone can design complicated, it takes genius to design simple"!

If you put the Y axis onto the gantry cross beam, with both it's rails on one face, and then mount Z off Y, you will have a much simpler ($$$$) job getting precise alignment.
    Thanks for the comments rotary.

The only reason for me wanting the Y-axis on the Z-axis is so I can have a large amount of travel for the Z, and without restricting the other two axis I can think of no other way.

I decided to change the design because of your comment about lining the 4 rails, I have no idea how I would do it accurately other than getting it ground afterward or maybe use some adjustable mounts but I don't think that would be very accurate.

Here are some pics of my new idea: http://img708.imageshack.us/g/cncv4c.png/
I have styled it after this picture posted by BobWarfield in another thread

are you going to use linear bearings or are you going to implat steal and then grind or scrape them?

I plan to cast ground steel or aluminum into the E/G and then mount linear rails to them.

I plan to make the mill yes, I wont be starting to make it until the design is OK, I'm kinda waiting on others to see what they think as I've never worked with E/G before.

If you look on this gantry, its gantry is on the back of x axis. What do you think the advantage of this position compare to position it in the middle of x axis? My plan is to pu gantry in the middle of x axis. Thanks.
