    Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
    Tech a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

    this should help

    http://www.aps.anl.gov/asd/me/Calcul...sticBeam2.html

    modulus=29000000 psi for steel
    moment of inertia=3.14*diameter^4/64 for a solid round
    enter your length in inches
    enter the point load as how much weight will be on it.
    pick the loading case, 4 is the simplest.
    hit go

    or are you looking for just the deflection of the rod with no load?
    then you need case 23
    set q to the weight per inch=volume*density=3.14*d^2/4*.283

    wow it took me a sec to figure out all the stuff but wow that made it easy now my next question what is an acceptable amount of deflection or should i aim for zero?

    thats up to you. Whatever you can tolerate will be your limit. It all depends on what you are building and what you are making.
