ACME - Can someone explain this?

I have been looking for sources for ACME, either Rods, Nuts, Taps, Dies, Gages, etc...

I have browsed through McMaster Carr for hours looking and compairing prices with other suppliers, but one common problem keeps slowing me down!

There is a void of ACME Taps, and GO/NOGO gages!

McMaster Carr sells more Acme stuff than any other supplier, they have the common 1/2-10 and 3/18-10 threaded rods, but only have taps for 1/2-10!

I realize that a lathe will cut a better thread than a tap, but some times a tap is more convienient!

Is there a premade carbide insert for turning internal ACME threads? I have been unable to locate them either!

Why is there such a void of ACME tooling?

Thanks, that is what I needed, they had a 3/8-10 ACME tap!

www.roton.com offers a good selection of pretty much everything acme. MSC has taps and also indexable inserts for cutting acmes as well as gages.

To be honest, I've never found mcmaster to be of much use at all, at least for the sorts of things I find myself shopping for. I've always found other suppliers to have more selection of better grade, cheaper.

I ordered a 3/8-10 tap yesterday 5/4/06, and it was in my mailbox today 5/5/06!

Nice transaction, if only all were that quick to process orders!


Anyone know the drill size for a 3/8-10 acme tap?
