    16" Pipe Headstock

    Hi,

I would like to make a headstock for a 16" pipe for cutting or welding purpose.
Could any one suggest where do i start.
I need help on the electric parts for the size of the motor and the controls, pulley ratio, etc.

Do you want to make a headstock from a 16" pipe? Or a headstock for lathe to cut and/or weld 16" pipes?

Yes its for headstock for lathe to cut and/or weld 16" pipes.

could you pls assist me with the extra pipe supports design, needed to hold and allow free rotation of the pipe. (may be a adjustable hieght tripod stand) ( but a very steady one to take the weight and give perfect accuracy while cutting.)

    Thanks,

    ali.

We need more dimensions of the pieces being machined/welded. Length and weight of individual pieces, length and weight of completed assemblies etc.

Are you familiar with internal work holding tools called "cat heads", exterior work holding adjustable rings, bull nose centers?

Huh, with free consultation information like that you could build any nigtmare that could possible be dreamed up.

A piece of pipe 16" diam and x amount of feet long is a different kettle of fish to a piece that is only 12" long.....the tail would wag the dog so to say if the pipe became so long you can't see the end of it etc etc.

Building a headstock starts with the spindle requirements.

Here we have a pipe 16" diam that does not have to pass through the bore of the spindle, so the spindle just needs to be able to support the weight at that end of half the expected length of the pipe you'd ever need to rotate, and it could just be a 2" diam bar rotating in plumber block ball races with a face plate attached permanently with bolted on jaws or a spigot to secure the pipe when rotating, and the whole lot attached to a tubular frame, possibly on a concret block, to bring it up to working level.

I expect the pipe needs chamfering for a weld preperation, and this will determine the length of the "lathe/rotator" to allow a steady support at the far end of the pipe.

At the same time welding the pipe insinuates that the pipe is being welded to another pipe of equal length.......if'n the pipe is 12 feet long this would suggest a floor area of at least 30 feet length to accomaodate two lenghts of pipe that are going to be joined....and where do they get joined to....more information as to capacity and environment is needed.

BTW, the longer the welded sections the more horse power needed to rotate them.

You could probably search for an engineering firm or machine tool supplier that can supply an old gun barrel lathe, the belt driven type, and some come with bed lengths of 50 feet or more.
