    splines vs keys?

Im not much of a engineer but ive got a few questions maybe someone could help me out with. I have a skid loader with the drive spindles wearing out. They are 1-3/8 by 21 spline shafts that go thru two timken bearings that take the straight and angular loads. They want $450 for a new splined spindle and they cant even look up the internally splined sprocket that goes on it. the dealerships ive been to say that its obsolete. My overall question is what would the strength loss be replacing the 1-3/8 by 21 splines with two 3/8 keyways? and would you put them 90 Degrees out or 180 degrees out. The keys were the only other thing i could come up with that would slide on the shaft so you could load the tapered bearings. any help with this would be great. thank you.

A skid steer is continually reversing loads, so I doubt that key(s) will be a long term solution. Can you use a keyless type bushing in place of the spline?

    bushing

I like that idea, are you talking about something like a browning QD bushing? Id still probably key it just to make sure it has a lock of some sort even though the taper is probably stronger. With the taper i could still preload the bearings and just put spacers to get the right sprocket chain alignment. thanks for the ideas!!

There are other shaft clamping devices that do not require taper bores or keyways. Ringfeder has a number of different types. Spieth as well.

They do require accurate/precise bores and good finishes.
