What measuring tools do i need to redraw this in solidworks?

I would like to re-engineer some motor mount plates. If you had to draw schematics of this, what tools would you need to do so? I would like to remake these in solid works. I feel like i am lacking the correct instrumentation to do so.
(short of a laser scanner, what is the oldschool *and correct* way to re-dimension these?)

    Thanks!!

Vernier, gauge pins, surface plate, angle plate, height gauge, protractor and maybe mics and/or bore gauges if any of those features need to be high precision.

How exact does it need to be? Flop it down on a copier, scan it in, paste the image in to Solidworks, make a sketch, then use a single "real world" measurement to scale it all to the right size. Depths and thicknesses would need to be done with calipers. Done.

OH that is very tricky! I have never imported pictures to sketches! I will give that a try and report back!

Thanks i need to buy all of those still! I wish there was a section in the forums where it just had a "what you need to start off, tools and equipment".

Sure its general but they could break it down by machine, like lathe, mill, drawings, etc.

Thanks hopefully i will order some of that stuff up tonight!

If you wanted to work to precise dimensions you could set this on a bridgeport or similar machine table and "chart" the entire profile and holes, arcs, etc with a Dial Test Indicator. Enter the points in a CAD program and complete the drawing.

I could get it pretty close with a tape measure. Draw it, print out a full scale paper template to check against, and adjust as needed.

It does not have to be super accurate as long as it can bolt up to the original position. Since Its going to use a belt drive i have some freedom

Im going to run to buy a cheapo scanner and see what i can do

hiya diyengineer, hope you are gettin some way forward, if not post a picture of the component again with a vernier open to exact 100mm or a stock bar of a known exact height (vertically) as a scale and I can write up an ops. sheet for you, or e-mail me the picture at kelefman@gmail.com

Where are you located? I'll measure it up, draw it out and send you the .sldprt file. If you'd want to ship me the part, I'll return it of coarse.
And if you need to be EXTREMELY accurate (.000005) I can put it on the CMM at work.
