Default Machinery's Handbook, figure is wrong? Need Maths advice please.

I've got the Machinery's Handbook 27th edition and on page 46, the definition of an elipse, see the line "a"? shouldn't it be shorter? ie: from the centre to the apex of the major axis?. They have it going fully tothe "Y" axis... this is confusing me since "b" goes from the centre to the apex of the major axis.

And I thought the eccentricity was given by b/(distance from centre toapex of Major Axis)

Confused and puzzled... am I wrong or is the Machinery's Handbook?

Default Lost the plot there !

    It sure looks wrong.
I mean, it makes no sense with a dimension to a random line.
Your observations are right, and it sure looks wrong.

You are right about "a", it was corrected in the 28th edition.

    Eccentricity is c/a

    Best regards

An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

As an aside, I've also found errors in "Engineering Mathematics" by K. A. Stroud, which is meant to be the mathematics bible.
