Help with radius in mazatrol

Hello!

Well, I'm new to the forum, I've lurked for a while picking up tips and the like but now I've run into something I can't solve.

I run a Nexus 100/Fusion 640T on the job and the problem is that I can't seem to make the machine cut a radius to x0. in Mazatrol while cutting a radius in the face of a casting. I've tried copy face and bar face and it always leaves a .125 nub in the center of the part; the tool's radius is .0625. The sim. also shows the tool not making to to the center of the part. I found a parameter that might work if I were using edge face, but unfortunately edge face doesn't seem to allow for the cutting of radii and in any event the parameter doesn't work in the case of copy face and bar face. The casting's finish od size is 1.248, the id size is 1.244 the radius depth is .187 and the radius is 1.128. Any ideas that will help solve my problem?

Thanks,
Bob

Can you post a sketch of your part, based on your part dimensions, your wall thickness is going to be .002" ( 1.248 o/d - 1.244 I/D= .004 / 2=.002"), I'm lost here, you say you need to machine a 1.128" R on this wall's edge?

lost and confused

Not at the machine, so I'm going off the top of my head here...but there's a parameter you can set for cutting past center?

You could (gasp) to into manual, MNP, for that unit and do it the hard way.

Also, you've got your tool nose radius set to the actual value of the insert?.....not that I've ever done that.....

fizzissist, I was "ASSuMEing" ((assuming)) that he had all his tool geometry data defined correctly, ASSUMING= making an arse of u and me!!!

fizzissist; there is a parameter for overcutting center but it seems as though it is designed for edge face only. And I do have the tool properly described... and I've tried lying with the same result. Grrrr. BTW it cuts the 1.244 size just fine and does a nice radius right to .125 (dia.) of center then it leaves a nub.

WILLwork... here's a sketch... hopefully.

nubbie in the center

I don't see it, post a picture of the actual part OR a corss section of it where the Radius goes

Try lying via the offset page. Offset X down enough to get rid of the nub. Worth a try if nothing else works.

I've done outside radius' to center with no trouble, wondering if the face clearance angle on the tool tip isn't big enough???
I've had occasion where I had to 'fool' the control by telling it in the Tool Data description that it was more or less than what the tool really was.

Nubbie

rstephen]]] try manually jogging the tool past center ( "X" Zero ) about .100", if you get an alarm, it means that it isn't sticking out in your pocket enough to cut /position past the center of your spindle, in which case all you have to to is slide it a 1/4" or so more out of the pocket, re-teach the tool and try again ( this has happened to me a number of times, just enough to piss me off for a day or 2 )

could you drill to the depth(to remove must of the tit ) and then use a bar face to rough it. finish it with a manual program. that way your tool geometry can't screw you up.

can't you just lie to the tool data? (about the nose radius, I mean)

you can lie to the tool nose radius but it may not generate a true form, because it is using the incorrect nose radius the generate the shape. if that makes any sense. i guess it all depends on your profile tolerance.
