Exclamation Any explination of this tool setup problem?

I was using a dogbone groove out tool, .25W .125R and the holder was interfering with the tool eye arm. As instructed I set up my work, turned a quick part, followed the directions in the fine manual, selected teach, entered the negitive Z from the know reference point all as instructed. Thought it was set, machine coor matched what was in the tool data offset list. Ran my program, when it indexed the tool I had setup it tried to cut about 2in positive Z from the end of the part. I'm using a QT250 with a Fusion 640 controller.

I hit the feed hold button and looked at the trace display. It showed the position of the tool over the correct position on the part, went to the postion display. My work coor said it was where it was suppose to be, in this case Z -.455, however the machine coor showed it at 10.#### and when I went through the teach function the Z offset generated was 12.#### so now I am confussed . Went back to tool data and sure enough it still read 12.#### paged through the various lists etc didn't find any offsets or wear values to cause this, all were set to 0. I managed to work around it in a so so manner by extending the insert just far enough to touch the tool eye correctly and then set it back in and reset the X on the tool eye. I had to get these parts out right away so I did what I had to, but I'd rather leave the Mickey Mouse stuff to Disney. I'd greatly appreciate any help that anyone could offer.

    Tool Geometry or Pocket Skip

I'm not a Mazak expert, but it sounds like your machine skipped a pocket in the tool changer or you need to fool the control into thinking something else. Most of the Mazak programmers have to Lie to the machine to get things to work. If this works Great, if not maybe someone with a lot more knowledge of Mazatrol will swing by to help.

One other thing, if you didn't call the tool pocket AKA Tool Number in MDI before setting the height this will happen too.
I hope this is a simple quick fix for you.

I didn't call it up as you said. I did a tool change after the fact like I would on a Cinncinnatti. That may be it, thank you. I'll give it a try and see.

It's really tough when you work with different Machines and Controls. Some times I get confused because I have 12 totally different Machines and Controls in my Head. I'm hoping that this is a simple answer for you. If not come back here or you can always call Mazak.

I appreciate the help. I forgot about something though, my machine will cycle the chuck if you do a mdi tool change. For the time being I can get by, but I have a few tools that can't be cheated that way. Thanks for the suggestion though, the response is appreciated. Guess I'll need to call Mazak.
