how to make NPT threads in Mazatrol Matrix

Do anyone have a nice trick on how to make NPT or any other conical threads without using the Planet cycle when programing???

Not sure about Matrix, as I've not used it, but on all the older controls the only way to do it is to use an ISO sub-program.

Just call the NPT tap a UN size (1E-27un) and the Planet cycle will work fine. Change D49 to 0 so it doesnt retract from the Z depth you programmed. You don't need Gibbs for this stuff.

Mr. Mazak; The question was for milling the thread, not using a tap. And here Gibbs got a fine process of milling conical threads.

--And for the record; klzz is a co-worker and long time friend of mine, so the "moron"-part was just for fun hehe

You don't understand the planetary tapping cycle. It is a thread MILLING cycle. Set up your thread mill as a floating tap and set the actual diameter in the Tool Data page. The thread mill you use will feed down to the depth you programmed (control the down feed in the sequence line) arc in to the wall 1/4 turn in, make one revolution around (like a planet) and arc out 1/4 turn all while moving the Z using the pitch in the sequence line. I have attached a sample program.

Mr. Mazak; Ok, my bad. Thought you meant tapping since you wrote tap and not thread mill. But this will still not help klzz, as he wants the threadmill to move conical and follow the threads angle. Say you have a mill with only one set of tooths that you have to use to make a conical thread, then you will need a program that moves conical.

We use the planet cycle metod for thread milling here all the time, also on npt-threads using conical mills. But tough we use conical mills for npt-threads, we still want the threadmill to move conical as this will be more correct for our products meant for high pressure in the oil industry. Bot me and klzz used to do this where we worked before, using macros. But since we started here we`ve only used planet cycle. One sollution is to make subprogram with gibbs for the npt-threads we use most common. klzz asked this question before we knew that we could do this with Gibbs.

But thanks for answers anyway

For a conical thread with a single point tool you can download the free threadmill program generator from vargus.com It works great and can be set for most cnc controls including Mazatrol.
