    manually Teaching Tool length Z offset, lathe

    How do I come to the correct tool data Z offset when using the "teach" function(manually) when there is a tool eye in the machine?

    A part is too long to allow the tool eye to clear. I need to manually teach the Z offset because the drill broke.

    If you have a face or shoulder you can take a tool that is set correctly up to, you can write down the machine position. Then move the set tool away and bring out the new drill after you have loaded it. Move it up to the same face and check the machine position. What ever the difference, this is the amount you need to add or subtract from the drill tool data z length to get the position displaying the same value as the set tool gave you.

    On my Mazak, you first need to look at the Z position offset for the program you are running. This is the Z teach value you initially taught to let the machine know where this program is in relation to the probe. On my T2/T3 control, this value is in the program file screen.

    Let's say this value is Z-1.2345. Take your new drill and go to the Z0 face of your part. Go to offset screen and type in Z-1.2345 and press teach, enter. The position screen will now read Z0 for that tool.

    You are now good to go.

    Why don't you teach with your tool eye before you chuck on your piece?

    His drill broke while machining a part. He is simply trying to avoid taking the part out of the chuck before he finishes this piece. BTDT many times myself.

    We lost the tool eye on our machine. we got a bar that we made to teach all our tools in Z I can't remember the dimensions of it. We had to call Mazak they let us know the length of the bar we needed to teach in z off of the chuck.

    Program A is the current program on the machine. Touch your tool off to the finish face of the part, which is Z0. Teach your tool in tool data for Z offset; Teach "0" input. That taught number is off by exactly the number of your Z-offset in the set-up page for Part/Program "A" only. So go back to the Z offset value and incrementally adjust it by the Z offset in the Set Up page for Program A. If Z offset is plus, then you have to make it a minus, but the number must be identical to the Z offset used in Program A that made Part A.

    PLAN B - take an already set tool, before your tool eye failed, wiht a dummy program with Z offset at "0". NO NUMBERS other than zero! Touch off this tool to the chuck face and record the position on the display. This is your FACTOR for teaching tool set Z off the chuck face.

    The TEACH function is to the X-Z machine datum, which for Z axis is typically 4.0" from the chuck face (or spindle face, or sometimes seemingly random) (X datum is spindle centerline, which doesn't EVER get shifted, thankfully) So if you're teaching to a part that used a Z-offset to be made, then the teach number is always incorrect by the Z-offset that was used to make the part used for the touch off/teach.

    A properly calibrated Tool Eye is to the machine datum. This is the target symbol on the stroke diagrams in the user's manuals.
