HD clone

Hi,

I need help or inputs

I have tried to clone my HD on Mazatrol 640 MT pro with a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA cable and Norton Ghost 9.0.

Everything seems ok, until I try to boot up the maschine with my clone disk.

When I do, it doesn´t even start up windows, not even a error message.
When I switch back to the original disc, no problem (it shuold be an exactly clone)

Does anyone have any experience to this problem?

Wrong cloning prog? Any parameters to change in Ghost?
I only want to keep an extra HD if the original fails. Don´t want to buy one from Mazak

try Fdisk on the clone and make the disk/ partition ACTIVE...
next thing is you can do is try a utility that can back up/copy the MBR (master boot record) from your original drive.

Ghost might have options for the MBR .. can't recall off the top of my head though.

Also, Im not sure if i remember, I know Ghost coppies partitions, but I think there was also an option for a Bit-for-Bit forensic grade disk copy...

Look up "Hirens boot cd" If you can find a copy of it, its just about all you'll ever need.

MBR

Sounds to me like the MBR didn't get cloned over.

If you don't have the Mitsubishi procedures it is almost impossible to get it to work. Best to let Mits handle it.

Doubt it. There are bit-by-bit hard drive cloners out there. (Hint: forensics, FBI...)

Try Acronis TrueImage if you can. It works wonders for me.

Cool

The hdd's are tied to the motherboard with the machines serial number so nobody can reproduce them to run on another machine, but you knew that I'm sure. You can copy it bit for bit and it will still not run the machine. Good luck

Smile

I think so too but, it's not a project for someone without experience. I have the procedures it's not as simple as a off the shelf hdd copy. I hope he owns the machine! Boy, if I had some guy in my shop trying to copy hdd's I would flip.

Workaround

oooo. ouch that really sucks.

If you want to do a work around though, you can:
A) Fingure out how to change the serial # yourself or

B) Get another hard drive that is exactly the same, down to the revision model, then clone the two drives bit per bit. To use the backup hard drive, you have to pray that the board didn't fry and that the problem is just the internal mechanics (like it normally is), take the pcb board off the recognized good hard and put it on the other hard drive, and then you should have a working secondary.

Please note: While I would do this (method B) myself, I don't necessarily recommend it to others because there a lot of things to mess up here. If you doubt yourself, then just do as MrMazak says and let Mitsubishi do it for you.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but here it is anyway.

Edit: Just saw this.

LOL can you imagine some employee taking apart the CNC machine in the middle of a business day for no apparent reason? HAHA that's hilarious!

No its not a simple copy, but I have used Acronis for exact Cloning of many HD's, some with very oddball systems, it does nothing to the original HD, and does not take that long. It is usually for maintenance back up only.

Re

Hi,

thanks for your comments.
Do not worry, I own the machine

I was looking for, at best, a "how to guide" or someone's experience to clone HD.

MrMazak: I understand you right?: The machine or the software uses the HD serial to work? Seem logical, but not impossible to fix :-)

I have some technical experience, and I'm willing to take a chance. A few months ago, my HD stopped working, but after some configuring (it lost it's MDR) I got it working.

Thats when I got the idea, and soon after I received an offer from Mazak for a new unit ($ 3,000) for a device that costs $ 75th
But the biggest loss was that the machine could not work a full day
