I've done that too. The files get HUGE. No real benefit to modeling it that way for machining purposes. But it does look cool.

I agree the file gets big, I usually for stuff like this I go to Mcmastercar site and get there solid models of bolts and screws and all in Solid works models and there not very big either.

Thank you,this is a part i had to model for a RFQ i wound up just creating a wireframe helix for representation (it sure looked weird).
i will practice on the technique you reccomended.
