FBM mill problems mastercam x3

i just tried the FBM Mill feature to try and create toolpaths for a seriously solid surface,i havent used surface toolpaths much and with any great result so i decided to try the fbm feature to create the toolpaths and save me weeks in figuring out the toolpaths manually,

well my computer locks up after 30 seconds is this normal?

this part has mucho pockets,champhers,filets,radius,contours,etc.

any info out there regarding FBM procedures?

thanks in advance

tim

You may want to try the Emastercam Forum as well. Calling your dealer couldn't hurt either.

Personally I was wondering about this new feature since the last issue of the Cimquest Newsletter. This will be an interesting thread.

I don't use this feature but I was told that it does not work on parts that have chamfers, fillets, etc...

i did some browsing on the emastercam forum on the FBM Feature, turns out there is a lot of hostility toward the marketing campign of "its so easy a 6 year old can do it"

also a lot of rumor that the product creates inneficient toolpaths which was my initial results on some 2d sample parts. 4 hours to machine a 20 minute part.

thank you for the heads up on the champher and filet advice.

just a quick question since i have to program the toolpaths manually now,

1. should i program the majority of the part (pockets) with 2d toolpaths then select surface toolpaths for just the champhers and filet edges?

seems as though would be faster that way,but more time programming, just didnt know if it was common practice,i have seen some videos where the complete part was machined from stock in 2 operations, which seems a little easier.

thanks

Timmy the FBM is for simple 2d profiles pockets contours flat bottom floors at this time.
there will be more coming in X3 but so far nothing handling 3s surfacing. if you show what you are cutting I will see if I can answer a quick easy way to go after it.

Cadcam, attached is a sample part all edges are champhered .100 and those edges have a .050 filet radius.

i have to step out of the shop to do a small job but i will be back this afternoon to work well into the night on this project.

thank you for your assistance.

I would personally go right after it with Surface Rough Pocket followed by Surf Rough Restmill and Surf Finishing as necessary... The best way is debateable(sp?) but that's how I'd do it.

i would like this part to have a nice looking uniform surfaced appearance,if i machine part of it in 2d and surface the radius areas it will take on the not wanted look of a 2d part with corner rounding radius toolpaths. (not sure if accurately described, ex taking a corner rounding tool and a contour toolpath)
