Hello guys, Once in a while I have engravings over here to do, engraving like letters with 1 ¼ high and 1/8 deep. I figure that using a 3/16-3 flute carbide with a Depth Cut of 0.0416, 2852 RPM and 4.2 IPM work very well. Does anyone advice me a different type of tooling and different RPM and IPM? |

| Hello cadcam I understand the concept of engraving, theoretically is: engraving is made using a cone shaped tool on a surface. my case is different I think... I'm asked to do a set of pockets/counters within limits, this final operation is considered as engraving because of the letters and icons, I can do all the work with no problem at all but I'm just looking for inputs... I pretend to write letters and icons fast on mild carbon steel without having the broken tool problem. would be good to have a .1875 or a .125 HSM face mill... this would work for me. any inputs? | When we engrave something on the mill, we usually use a combination center drill. Usually a #3 or #4 depending on the size of the text being engraved and how we want it to look. But I do see you're going 1/8 deep so an end mill would be better. Depending on what text you use, you could do a pocket tool path. If you wanted just the outline of whatever is being engraved done, use an engraving operation and turn roughing off. Not sure this post was any help, but if it was then ok. Also, if you want to give a snap shot of the text you're wanting to engrave, I could give you some more ideas of what could be done. |

| chevcamo we know you are a newbie to the zone ....welcome but just a couple of hints of advice - threads do go dead over time, so look at the post dates, anthing more than a month old may be a bit stale, and the OP ( original poster ) may give a bump ( to re-ask a query, or bring it near the top of the pile- but seeing he started it in 2008 - I'd say his issue would solved by now ) -if contributing to an active thread, I may suggest those that are less than 2 weeks old ( mine is set to show posts "from last week" , you'll work out the best setting for you ) - threads can be hyjacked, with a completely irrelevant guestion being asked ... these hyjacks should be ignored....they'll learn to do a searrch, add a post to a relevant thread, or start his own thread in the correct forum ------very similar to this actual thread. Happy postings |
