DFX will not bring in 3-d entities if I remember right. Here from help file"Select Blank "Paper Space" entities if you want Mastercam to blank out "Paper Space" entities when converting AutoCAD files. "Paper Space" is an AutoCAD function often used for notes, drafting entities, etc. around the geometry. By selecting this option, Mastercam will not bring those entities into the converted file."

.dfx will only support 2D geo.
no solids, no surfaces
just points, lines, and arcs on a flat plane in x,y

Maybe in MasterCAM, but .dxf files can contain solids and any other entities (except nurbs surfaces) in 3D space, not just flat.

But Ger21 is correct it now supports and for about 5 years or more. it also support Solids and 3d wire support.

Catch22 can you share the file you are having trouble with along with some info.
Info= What Cad systems was it made in and What version of that software?

Sorry, I should of said Mastrcam 9.1mr0105(dfx will only support 2D geo.
no solids, no surfaces
just points, lines, and arcs on a flat plane in x,y) January of 05 was the first maintenance release for mastercam and the last release of 9.1 and as far as I know 9.1 DXF never supported anything but 2-d geometry.

V9 will read surfaces and 3D wire from a DWG file and also from an SAT. The SAT conversion actually made DWG's of each solid model contained in the SAT.
