    Rigid Tapping

I just bought a new makino s33. I have never done rigid tapping before and I need to learn. I program in mastercam and I am wondering if there is anything special I need to do in programming. Do I program the tapping the same and change my post to put out the the right code?

    Thanks in advance

make sure you keep your speed and feed at 100%...

my machine won't adjust the settings, i've busted taps by not having both at 100%

the spindle down feed is syncronized with the spindle rpm...

this format works on our Makinos

G8P0 ( TURN OFF HIGH SPEED MACHINING )
    S------- ( SETS RPM )
    M135 ( ACTIVATE RIGID TAP MODE )
    G98G84X----Y----Z----R---F---( F= IPM)
    HOLE POSITIONS
    G80
    G8P1 ( RESUME HIGH SPEED MACHINING )

Your feed rate should be in sync with spindle rpm

Your MC post can be modified to generate this
If you can ENVISION it I can make it

    ?

is not a tapping head the only way to be sure it tap the part correctly? I am trying to learn tapping operations also but am a bit afraid of just putting a tap straight into a collect.

by using a tapping head (compression and retraction only), it will allow for minor fluctuations in depth only... this is the safe way of doing it...

by using a torque controlled tapping head with compression and retraction... if the clutch/torque slips... you will loose the spindle syncronization with the tap... this is bad, and you'll probably break the tap...
biltz type tapping heads/collets are your best bet... i just switch it from the radial drill to the cnc... i only use the direct drive collets on the CNC and the torque controlled collets on the Radial drill

We have a 1998 Hitachi-Seiki CNC Lathe that I haven't run in years. I have now been asked to pick it up to teach someone else how to run it. I am trying to figure out how to program a tapping procedure for a holle on the center of a part. I have a tapmatic floating rigid tap tool but can't remember how I programmed the tapping cycle. I don't recall using a special G-Code to rigid tap. Basically it was just feed in the same feedrate as your tap pitch, stop the spindle, reverse the spinde and feed out. Does anyone have a program that I could use? Our programming software does not include a rigid tapping cycle.

    Thanks,
