Need Help w TL-3 machine config and mastercam x

I am trying to figure out how I should set up the machine configuration file for my Haas Tl-3. I am relatively new at mastercam and my dealer says to just run mastercam with the SL series configurations. I am not looking for someone to set up my system, just a little guidance on how to setup for the conventional style lathe. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Pat

Is the tool come from the bottom or the top. I had just gone thru some issues with a customer running the TL-2 lathe.

cadcam,

the tool is oriented in the traditional manual lathe position, so in mastercam it should be coming from the bottom but the tool automatically jumps to the top (as in normal cnc lathes) even after attempting to set up the machine config files.

thanks

ok so your tool should be set for the bottom and the post should be putting out a Postive X motion.
Did you get a post from your dealer for this control?

CadCam,

That is how i have it right now. and no, the dealer said just to use the generic fanuc post, that is all that is required. Or he said to pick up a generic post for a sl-20 and use it...all in all i am so confused it is unreal.

thanks again

Pat

The TL machines do have the tool in front but the programs should be configured the same as on the SL. The controller runs the TL the same as a normal machine, graphics display the same as on the SL and a program can be taken from the TL and loaded into the SL and run without changes. Programs from the SL may have to be edited to run on the TL because the TL with auto toolchanger only has four tools.

Geof,

That makes sense. Apparently that is what my dealer is trying to say. Now, Do i set the tooling to the front or do i just "pretend" it is like a conventional cnc and program that way. Would that affect how the tooling is defined?

On a lathe Z- is toward the headstock, Z+ is away; X- is toward the centerline X+ is away. It does not matter whether the X guideways are behind, in front, above or below.

The TL should have some sample programs; run them in graphics they look just the same on the TL as they do on the SL.

It does not worry me if anyone claims this is not true until they are blue in the face. I develop programs on the TL and then transfer them to either an SL10, HL1 or GT20 and with the exception of editing for tool selection as I mentioned, they run identically.

The haas dealer wouldn't say if programming is identical, although in the class, everything is taught from the SL book.

There is a TL post from mastercam on their site, it might be close.

I need to check on the TL-3 but I know for sure that the TL1 & 2 have this issue.
