Default Modifying a Haas 4 axis post

    Hi guys,

I have a question about how to modify a Mastercam post for a Haas 4 axis mill. Is there a way to set the post processor up to output the A axis command to only 3 decimal places, instead of 4. When using our 4th axis in the past we used it mainly for indexing. But now I have a project that requires simultaneous movement to engrave on a cylinder. The mill control only reads the A axis out to 3 decimal places, and our post outputs to 4. so it it is causing an address error. Any help would be appreciated. I have no expiriece with modifying a MC post so I am over my head on this one. Also will anything need to be changed in the machine def file if the post is changed?

Will be in the format section. Probably one of these:

    fmt A 11 cabs #C axis position
    fmt A 14 cinc #C axis position
    fmt A 4 indx_out #Index position

Thanks but that isn't really any help for me. I know nothing about modifying a post for MC. As a side note though I am using MX6.

Then upload a copy of the post processor you are using here, zipped into a ZIP file. Then someone can try to help you with modifying it.

    txcncman,

Apologies for not understanding your reply, and not uploading the post file I am using. I got a PM from one of the forum members that told me I should have posted the files I needed help with. I have had a rough week, trying to get this project done. went down a couple of paths that yielded poor results to get a museum replica made of an artifact under a tight deadline. so I decided to model it up in CAD and machine it rather than making a silicone mold again for a third time. What I was trying to do is make a replica of a postal handstamp for a traveling exhibit. I was running on a lack of sleep and stressed trying to meet a deadline. Hoping that someone could help me. But I now realize that I was swinging in the dark trying to hit something, and didn't give anyone the onfo to help me properly.

The guy who shot me the PM asked for the files and I sent them along. He had suggested the same thing as you. He called me at the shop to walk me through making the modifications. I looked at your reply and then the mill post file and didn't have a clue where to begin. But long story short, with the help of a guy named John from Canada, I was able to get it sorted out, and put in some extra hours to get the part machined. Thanks for your input.

Also I want to say thank you to John for calling and walking me through the issues I had. I don't know his forum name, but still want to give a shout out to him for the help. I learned a valuable lesson on this one. If I need help then I need to provide more info. Now I can relax over the weekend knowing that I was able to meet my deadline.

the haas post does not need to be chages to a 3 place for it to work with true 4 axis milling on a haas. I am really not sure why you feel you need to change this.I have Programmed many of these and do not have to change the post for this work.

Maybe you can expalne why you feel that you need to do this.

    Cadcam,

The reason I felt that i needed help was it just plain ol' was not working on our Haas. I was getting an invalid address error message. I had placed a call to the trainer who gave me the MC multiaxis training, and was using his post that he tweeked. I couldn't get a hold of him and was under a deadline.

I spoke with a Haas tech and he said it was an issue with the post from Mastercam. He walked me through hand coding a program and we tried it out to 3 and 4 decimal places. 3 worked fine for the A axis, but the hand coded program did the same error message when written out to 4 decimal places. I got it working after getting help from John Bennett, and now everything is working fine.

So all in all I had success, and moved on.

Chris thanks for the followup. still not sure why but if it is working then so be it.
I have my posts for haas I have used for years and never had to make this mod. I never had a Mastercam customer as tech support for Mastercam dealer call and said he or she had this issue and needed me to make this work,I trainined and installed all the seats of MC at the Haas factory out here in cali and they never called and asked me to change to 3 places. this why I asked. I look at it this way like you said it is working for you that is what is most important.
PS who is John Bennett is he a board memeber here?

I don't know either, but glad I was able to get the program running, and make my parts. I don't know if it was a geometry issue or what. But i was able to complete what I needed to. I would be interested in finding out more about this though. Since you have a direct link to Haas, you might be the person to help. I will be busy over the next few days, but would like to follow up with you on this. since we have a VF4 ss set to be delivered in a few weeks. I want to be sure that we are going to be ok with the new machine. Oh and yes John Bennett is a forum member from Canada. he is a retired guy enjoying his time and probably not much of a poster, but don't know his posting history for a fact. i got a PM from him offering to help me.
