Mastercam Handbook Vol. 3 or 4 & 5 Axis Mill Training Tutorial... which is better?

I am considering ordering either the "Mastercam v9 Handbook Vol.3" or the "Mastercam 4 & 5 Axis Mill Training Tutorial" from my local MC dealer but would like to get some input from those that have used them to which one has more useful learning information? I already have the Vol.1 and Vol.2 handbooks which I find to be very informative but I also have the "Mill Training Tutorial" which is not bad too, but does not have as many pages as the handbooks. I believe the Vol.3 handbook covers the learning of, among other things, 4th axis milling which is what I want to learn more about but does it cover as much about multi-axis milling as the "4 & 5 Axis Mill Training Tutorial"?

Has anyone had any experience with these manuals and wouldn't mind sharing their opinion on which they like more and why?

I just purchased the Mastercam X 4th and 5th axis trainning tutorial. I know it's a diffrent version but I will let you know what I think. My problem with most MC books is that they will tell you how to do something, but not why!!! And for the price($95.00) in my case, it should damn well tell you why you picked comp to tip instead of just telling you to do so.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I seem to find that the MC handbooks seem to go into abit more detail when it comes to the "Why" you do certain things as well as the how, then the tutorials do.
I guess that is to be expected seeing how they are the ones used in the training courses that you take. I would hope they go into greater depth then the tutorials seeing how the 4 & 5 axis milling tutorial will cost me $95 as where the Vol.3 Handbook is $120.

Both books have there place. The Hand books are like you are all reading more of a detailed book on the options & Controls.

The Tutorals on the other hand are more of the bouncing ball and not much of a break down. But the VX seem to have more this time then in V9 ones.

I have used the Tutorals for years for training and sell allot more of them then others, part is due to the Price.

If you can, get both truthfuly as the 2 togeather complament each other.

I must say....I am not liking the tutorial book. It leaves a lot to be desired.
Cadcam...do you sell a handbook on MCX 4th and 5th axis?

At this time for MC-X there is only that one till the rest of the Hand Books come out.
I will see if I can find out when to expect the rest this week.

After talking with the local MC dealer I ended up getting the 4 & 5 axis V9 tutorial instead of the Vol.3 handbook. They told me that the 4 & 5 axis Tutorial is more specific and it's the one they use when they teach the course. It being $25 cheaper then the handbook was also a factor. HEHE
So far I have found it to be pretty good but I think I have already found and error or omission in one of the geometry creation lessons. I could be wrong though. Will go through it a third time to see if I missed something.

you might call your MC dealer and see if they have any classes also. i sent a few of my guys to the MCX class even though they were proficient at what they did. They came back and tought me a few things i didnt even know. its worth a call anyways.

My training tutorials for Rotary Contouring will give you the starting principles that you need for 5 axis work. They cover all the different types of 4th axis work you might do in Mastercam.

I also have a 3d Surface machining Tutorual for Mastercam (X & V9 ) that shows quite a lot. Check out the web site below or call if you have any questions.

I have bought about half a dozen MC books. I like Mike Mattera's vids more than any of them. The 3d vid and 4th axis vid are about all you could ever need.



Don't know the guy, have no connection to him.

He makes a good product.

I'm not a big fan of the factory books.
