    Default Mastercam X won't install on Win 7 64-bit

I have been running Mastercam X on XP Home just fine but am moving to a new Win 7 64-bit computer. When I try to install Mastercam, Win 7, the first step is to "install .NET v1", which is Microsoft .NEAT Framework 1.1. However, WIN 7 tells me that "This software has known incompatibility with IIS Services". I'm afraid to install it and possibly mess up my new WIN 7 installation.

So, my question is, will Mastercam X wok on Win 7 64-bit. If so, how do I get it to install. If not, will it work in the XP virtual machine compatibility boot? (I don't have that on my machine but am willing to add it if necessary to get X to work.) I cannot upgrade this software as I'm a private pay and just cannot afford it.

Thanks for any help - I've searched this forum and hope I haven't overlooked an answer.

    Hello,

I just recently acquired a laptop that has Windows 7 and I absolutely HATE the O.S. I was planning on trying to install Mastercam in the morning but you pretty much confirmed my suspicion that it won't run in Windows 7. I managed to install my VB6 and C++ programming software, but it provokes warning messages when I run the software.

One of my programs that I wrote in C++ has a timer and when I run the program it makes other various windows blink every time the timer hits. Microsoft has always been pretty good about backwards compatibility but they pretty much abandoned it with Windows 7. I'll put up with it until I get totally p'd off and then I'll format the disk and install Windows XP Professional.

I have been forced to buy a Mastercam upgrade in order to run a new version of Windows so I know what you mean about the cost factor. I feel like a chump when I think about the $17,000.00 that I have spent with CNC Software Inc. while others are running the full package that they downloaded off of the internet for free.

I can't believe that companies like CNC Software Inc. can't do a better job of securing their software.

    Good Luck

Default Works in Win 7 XP Mode Virtual Machine

I did get it to install by adding the Win 7 XP Mode Virtual Machine to my Win 7 64-bit and installing it in that. Seems to work fine, though I haven't tried to do much with it yet.

My understanding about running legacy programs in Windows 7 is what wcthomas did. You have to use Windows 7 Professional or better, download and install the Windows XP Mode emulator, run that as a "Virtual Machine", and then run the legacy program in the virtual machine. Haven't done it myself; only read about it as we are contemplating getting more current computers that come with...you guessed it...Windows 7!!!

Ummm, you guys ever hear about compatability mode???
Mcam X5 runs just fine in Win7 Home Premium 64-bit using WinXP Service Pack 3 mode.

I had a brand-new Win 7 Pro 64-bit installation and went to the Microsoft site to download the XP and Virtual Machine software. There are two downloads, and the site is not clear but you need both. Installl the XP and then the Virtual Machine. There's a third download if you are not already on Win 7 SP 1. You click on the menu item Virtual Machine/XP Mode, and it sets up the Virtual Machine as an XP operating system. Then just install as usual there, and you are in business.

Note that I could NOT install straight into WIn 7 Pro 64-bit as it did not want me to install the Net frame version it needed.

    Hello wcthomas

Why is your computer running IIS sevices at all ..... these are to turn your computer into a web-server. If you know this, perhaps the question should be why run Mastercam on a webserver?

As this is a new machine I would ensure it is backed up and then using Add/Remove Programs and go to Windows Components and remove IIS services ... names may have been changed since XP which I have.

    Regards

    Richard

rgammage is spot on. Don't install or at least don't start IIS.

I have been running Mastercam XV for well over a year on Win7 without any problems or hitches whatsoever, except that you may have to start "test Mode" to allow all the drivers to work properly. Win7 can be very nasty about loading drivers.

Here is a website that can help with this.

Using virtual machine is a bit of a hit and miss. I have found that some software works well with it others do not. This however may be due to my having a single core processor.

If you are going with updated machines, be sure to get multi-core processors with at least 4 gig of ram. Those additional cores give you extra muscle and you will have a better experience with the virtual machine by doing so. With a single core the computer runs slow, much slower than you would want in a commercial environment where speed equals efficiency. Quad cores are perhaps your best bet when using virtual machines.

The issue with drivers in Win7 is due to Win7 requiring drivers to be signed. This is allegedly for the benefit of security. The scanning software that came with my Epson Workforce 610 does not have signed USB port drivers and Win7 will not load those drivers. The software works fine if I connect it over the network.

True, usually. Not always. If you initiate Test Mode in Win7 you can load and run unsigned drivers. This is the usual problem with Mastercam versions for XP running on Vista or win7. Just follow the instructions from my previous link and Mastercam and your Epson drivers will load just fine.

Are you using the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of Win7?

I am with you and I run Win7 64bit running on this box X3, X4, X5 in the 32 bit versions and X6 in the 64 bit version. no issues and win 7 is rock solid.

Default Windows 7 Professional & Mastercam

    Hello,

I have previously placed a post regarding Windows 7 Professional and Mastercam at an early point in this thread. It was in response to another members comment regarding trouble with the two afore mentioned programs. Following my post another member responded and stated that he was running Mastercam in Windows 7/XP Mode and had no problems.

On his suggestioned I tried to install Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode. It would run one time directly after the installation, but it would never run again after it was shut down. I never actually had a chance to try Mastercam so I can't say whether or not that it would run in Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode.

I'm very determined so I did some research and came up with VMwares free virtual machine. I had a terrible time getting the VMware virtual machine to run, but it's up and running now with no issues. I installed Mastercam v9 this evening and it installed without a hitch. I opened the program and configured the new application and began to work. The first glitch that I encountered was you can't drag a window for selection. The second glitch is that when selecting a line for 'End Point' it always returns the actual cursor position as opposed to finding the end of the line.

I don't know whether the problem is with Mastercam or the XP Mode. I guess it really doesn't matter because I own both of them.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Has anyone found a fix for the problems?

    Thanks,
    Ron

We have been using X5 wth Win 7 64 bit since X5 came out. It works absolutely fine. Call your reseller.

We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts :) If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.

    wcthomas,

Well I can give you a fresh answer being as how I just recovered from a system freeze up. This is the third and last time that I will try Mastercam on this machine. Windows 7 Professional 64 with or without XP Mode is not a working solution. I'm computer literate and have used Mastercam since the first release of version 5.

No need to contact CNC Software Inc. bcoz I'll guarantee you that the could care less.

    Good Luck
