Toolpath for screw extruder on a lathe

Can anyone help me on defining a toolpath on mastercam lathe (no live tooling) to create a screw extruder from an imported parasolid file from SolidWorks?

I tried to rough chain it with solids, but it gives me an error "unable to extract lathe profile from solid".

Here's a picture of what it looks like: http://www.robertbarr.com/images/innovation.jpg

Is it also maybe possible to custom create this with the thread toolpath on the lathe?

Try on a new level : create surfaces from solid then use the surfaces to create a turn profile then use that profile to chain the tool paths

Hi metlshpr, thanks for the advice.

I tried creating surfaces and then a turn profile like you said, but all it did was give me a square box as my profile. Which means I am only roughing down the diameter of my stock.

Do you have any other thoughts?

I think you should try to go the "thread" tool path way. Because of the "screw pitch" of the part MC is having trouble profiling. It is seeing the pitch when it turns the model as high points and creating a profile as such. You should be able to figure out the "pitch" of the screw and then use different z offsets to remove the bulk of material. I'm not sure how big the the part is, hard to tell from the pic, so you might just need a special or profile tool then just "thread" the part. If you want, post a file and I'll take a look.

    P.S. I'm using X5

I'm not sure what your resources are but I would grind or EDM a form tool and program this as a thread. You should be able to get the angle and the .02 rad from the "insert" of the tool.

    Thanks for the help!
I guess I'll try grinding a form tool for this part then.

Sorry but I don't see what the pitch size matters to the cnc. It will do what ever you tell it to do. Maybe you should look before you leap (speak). The pitch on this particular part is around .750. By the way this forum is for sharing and getting knowledge, not for stroking people with superiority complexes. Thank you and have a nice day.
