I was wondering if there is a way to take a image to be able to engrave that image into something. I know things have to be lines to get it to do a tool path acrossed it. Example would like to take a picture of a cobra that I found that I would like to engrave into my valve cover for my drag car. How can I do this? Any help would be great. |

| One would be use Raster to vector option in mastercam to change the picture to lines and arcs. then you can use contour to engrave with. Other thought is I have the cobra from the back of the t shirt I got from Carol Shelby's lead machinist gave me all ready scanned in. Just let me know. And I should have a quick video sampling easy ingranving as I stated. I will look back here tonight.

| That is funy as you can use a friends copy or the boss wants to let you take home to do a fun project on your home garage cnc. nothing wrong with that.as long as that friend is not leasing to the other person. Also I think I am ok with the hole carol thing or he wouldn't years back given me a copy of his signature to scan in and engrave a oil pan for him.

I also didn't know that if a customer gave us a file to engrave for them that means I can scan and distribute any other property of theirs. Cool. I wish CNC Software was as easy going as you. Lots of people would love to play by your rules... ![]() John |

| I am beginning to think TheBigJW, foxsquirell, and littlebrewman, are losing the focus of this forum. My understanding is the forum is for experienced Mcam users to HELP less experienced users, not to debate the nuances of trademark and intellectual property infringement. Also, using a trademarked image for your own personal use, i.e. valve cover for your personal car, is NOT the same as taking said image and implying that it is your own work or using the image in a commercial application.

| I want to know exactly how create an engraving tool path for letters in mastercam x4. This version seems to be so much more tricky than previous versions. Has anyone got a step by step instruction on how to select engraving once I have typed the letters? |

| I wouldnt worry about the engraving paths, just do the contour path. The only difference I have noticed is when engraving the bit will lift off of the surface every 1/2 inch or so where as a contour will not lift up at all. |

| I also use the contour function when engraving. Using window to select my tool path geometry. On the valve cover I would model the valve cover and then project the image onto the surface of the cover to make it a 3-d contour
