STL files

I downloaded a free file from Vector Clip 3D | Vector Clipart - Relief Stl Files - Vector Art 3d Clipart the rosette, I dont have a problem opening the file in mastercam x4 but when I try to create a tool path I am having a problem selecting the whole surface. I did try the flow line but it would tell me nothing is selected, so I tried the high speed milling same problem. I did use the selection box all around the part like you would with a 2d part but it didnt work.

Do a search here for mastercam and stl files. You don't want to use these to create toolpath if at all possible. They are used for stock in verify.

you can machine only surfaces or solids. Ask somebody who has Verisurf ReSurf (or any other software fo reverse engineering) to create surface from stl.

That's strange...and for some reason when I search for STL this post doesn't even come up...lol.

Well, to make a long story short, it ain't a good idea to use a STL type of file for toolpath (I know, duh). As you probably know, they are mainly used to create Stereolithography 3d models and like Smirkof alluded to, they aren't typical CAD CAM surfaces. The surfaces have been broken into triangles which basically gives you junk (not a nice clean model imo)

They are only used for running your program in VERIFY


The file you got may be used for a verify operation of another file with the actual model. You may want to see if there is an additional (actual mastercam) file.

Well the web site only has rlf and vna files besides the stl file type and I dont know if those can be used in mastercam. I read some where that once you open it as a stl file you save it as a mcx file then reopen it and covert it with nurbs ? Havent been able to try it since I have to work what files do you recommend to do 3d objects in mastercam ?
