Mastercam x4 and AI files

I have mastercam X4, now I have downloaded the aztec calender from the download section (aztec.ai) this file opens just fine in mastercam, now when I try to open a .ai file that I created mastercam says it doesnt look like an EPS file or it might be version 9 or higher. I am using adobe illustrator CS4, do I need to save the file as CS2 ? CS3 ? I just dont understand why the aztec file will open but the lakers file wont open when they are both .AI files
