You can't. The formats are different.

You can have them save it in something like a .dxf or a .dwg and open that just fine however.

Tell them to save the file as Version9 (.mc9).
X3 can save the file as older version, not sure about X2 though.

    **SOLVED**

So I am using x9 and I wanted to save as (mcx) and it said it wasn't able to. So then I save it in the following method.

File>Save As>*All Files* (drop down menu)

Then name your file whatever you want and end it with (.mcx-4, mcx-3, mcx-2)

Then locate the file and right click it to rename it and change the mcx-4 to (.mcx).

Ok so when you save it as (.mcx or another version older than what you're using) Mastercam detects you trying to save it as an older file so it gives you an error message but since (.mcx-4,mcx-3,mxc-2) don't exist, it doesn't detect anything.

    x, x²,x³,x⁴--(.mcx)
    x5-above --(.mcx-5,mcx-6 and so on)

So there is no such thing as (mcx-4, mcx-3, mcx-2)

If you want it to open in 32-bit or 64-bit you'll have to rename the file in the computer you're using..

    It saves tool paths too!

I don't know why Mastercam isn't able to do this
It should give us that option.
It's scheme to make us buy the newer versions

    Hope it helps all y'all

I'm using Mastercam 2017 and tried this - following your instructions completely - can't open the file in Mastercam X5 or X9. Does anyone else have this problem?

Beacuse you can't as the file and path are not compatible. it does not work. if it were that easy then CNC software would of done it. Also the GUI and more hase changed over the versions that make them incompatible.

You can't. Try exporting to IGS. You won't be able to import toolpaths unless you save them as geometry on the newer version. But all the newer versions should be able to save files with MC9 extension. I doubt that the operations will come into an older version though. The older version just don't have the same toolpath options.

You can save for example a X3 Mastercam file and open with everything to X9 to 2018. but you cannot save a X3 and open in it in Mastercam V9.1 being prior to the X series. You can get Geo in most cases back. but you have to look at what the geo is. for sxample if you have a solid model you cannot save it using IGES. but if you convert the solid to surfaces then you can. but if I have a Solid model I would save as a Step or Parasolid. BUT when you to go to options and save to an older versions of Step or Parasolid as those formats just like the software's have grown. Another reason to upgrade you software.

There really rhymes to the resins on how these things work.

    Hope this helps.

Oh man I forgot. you cannot bring newer file back into older ones with any paths. never have been able to do that.
